Luminans er et mål på hvor lys en flate er. Det angir hvor mye lys som slipper gjennom eller reflekteres av en bestemt flate innen en gitt romvinkel, og indikerer hvor sterk lysstyrke et øye vil oppfatte når det betrakter flaten fra et bestemt punkt, med andre ord hva vi mennesker oppfatter som lystyrke
Belysningsstyrke = Lysstyrke per område målt i Candela per m² (cd/m²).
Luminans oppgis i SI-systemet som candela per kvadratmeter (cd/m²). I CGS-systemet er enheten for luminans stilb (sb), hvor 1 sb = 1 cd/cm².
